Gemcom Whittle 4.5.1

Gemcom Whittle the industry-standard strategic mine planning and pit optimization software. Originally developed by Whittle Programming and later acquired by Gemcom (now part of Hexagon Mining), it uses the Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm and other advanced techniques to analyze a block model of mineral resources. It defines the most economically profitable pit shell (or underground mining shape) based on commodity prices, costs, and geotechnical constraints, forming the critical foundation for all subsequent detailed mine design and scheduling.

Primary Users

Gemcom Whittle 4.5.1 is a specialized strategic mine planning and optimization software designed for Mining Engineers, Strategic Planners, Resource Geologists, Financial Analysts, and Consultants in the open-pit and underground mining industry who are responsible for determining the ultimate pit limits, pushback designs, and life-of-mine schedules that maximize Net Present Value (NPV).

Key Features & Capabilities

  • Lerchs-Grossmann Pit Optimization: The core algorithm for determining the ultimate pit limit—the shape that maximizes total profit given a set of economic parameters.
  • Nested Pit & Pushback Analysis: Generates a series of nested optimal pit shells (or phases) at different revenue factors, which are used to design practical, operational pushbacks for mine scheduling.
  • Multi-Process & Stockpile Modeling: Handles complex scenarios with multiple processing methods (e.g., mill, heap leach) and stockpiling options, optimizing the destination for each block.
  • Sensitivity & Uncertainty Analysis: Allows engineers to test the robustness of the optimal pit against changes in metal prices, operating costs, recovery, and other key economic inputs.
  • 3D Visualization & Reporting: Integrated 3D viewer to visualize optimal pits, pushbacks, and economic data on the block model. Generates comprehensive reports on tonnes, grade, and cash flow.
  • Integration with Mine Planning Suites: Designed to work seamlessly with other Gemcom/HxGN MinePlan packages (like MineSched) and can import block models from most major geology packages (Leapfrog, Vulcan, Surpac).

What’s New in Version 4.5.1

This version represents a mature and stable release in the Whittle lineage, focusing on refinement and compatibility.
  • Enhanced Windows 64-bit Stability: Full optimization for 64-bit Windows operating systems, allowing for the processing of larger, more complex block models without memory limitations.
  • Improved Data Import/Export Filters: Updated and more robust connectors for exchanging block model and geologic data with a wider array of third-party software.
  • Refined Economic Parameter Management: More intuitive interfaces for defining complex cost and revenue structures, including time-based cost schedules.
  • Extended Reporting Capabilities: Additional charting and graphing options for presenting the results of sensitivity analyses to stakeholders.
  • Bug Fixes & Performance Tweaks: General improvements to the user interface and calculation engine stability.

💻 System Requirements

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7, 8, or 10.
  • CPU: Multi-core processor (Intel Core i5/i7 or equivalent recommended).
  • RAM: 8 GB minimum (16 GB+ highly recommended for large block models).
  • Graphics: OpenGL compatible graphics card with 1 GB+ dedicated VRAM.
  • Storage: 500 MB for installation + significant space for project block model files.
