WellScan is a software package built with the main purpose of providing answers to intricate drilling situations (mechanical, directional, dynamic).

Based on decades of research carried out with Mines Paris Tech Geosciences Center, WellScan software was built from the advanced coupled analyses of three domains :

• Rock mechanical behavior,
• Drilling bit interaction with the rock, and
• BHA/drill string hole interaction.

WellScan is a commercial product developed by DrillScan. DrillScan was founded in 2001 with the main objective of being a bridge between research done in the Mines Paris Tech Geosciences laboratories and the Oil & Gas drilling industry. Today, DrillScan is a company that delivers advanced services, software packages and training to the drilling community.

Research in DrillScan focuses on two main areas : the drill string modeling and the bit modeling.

• The drill string modeling is based on a new numerical solution that overcomes the problems of Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This new numerical solution has been validated against the FEA solution and gives the same results, although much faster.

• The bit modeling is based on numerous published PhD thesis which describe the interaction between a single cutter and diverse types of rocks. To validate all of the defined models, from elementary cutter to global PDC Bit, Drill Scan uses both a single cutter test bench –testing cutter wear for example– and a full scale drilling bit test bench, in Pau, France, which is unique in Europe.

Only a full understanding of what is occurring from bit to surface can improve drilling performances for today’s complex wells.
